Shirogane Blue pond is a world famous tourist attraction site and a popular place to go in Japan. Located in Biei town of Hokkaido Prefecture, the ponds eye catching blue and green looking water that changes by the direction of light – will actually steal your heart every time you look at it.
This pond was formed by man made attempt to control the mudslides from Mt. Tokachi erosion. Today this man made pond has become a hotspot for photographers as well as regular tourists from all over the world.
The mystical blue color of the pond is actually the result of when aluminum that presents in the pond water breaks up the light from within that fall over it.
How to visit this pond?
From Biei Station to the pond it takes about 18 to 20 minutes by bus or car. From parking lot it takes about 10 minutes to reach the pond by foot.
Blue Pond – Entry Fee and Address
Visitors can visit this pond free of charge. Parking fee is 500 yen per car. Parking hours are 7:00 to 19:00 from May to October and 8:00 to 21:00 from November to April.

When to visit Blue Pond Hokkaido?
If you want to enjoy the unearthly blue color of the pond, then June to August is the ideal time. If you want to visit in Winter then it should be October or end of December. From October snow will start to fall. On this month the water will not get frozen yet and you can enjoy the place surrounded by trees covered with snow. At the end of December the pond itself will get frozen mostly.
In Winter, visitors can enjoy illumination light that happens from 17:00 to 21:00.
Some Handy Tips
Some handy suggestions for visiting this place are – for Summer try to visit in August but outside of golden week period if possible. Check the weather beforehand, a sunny bright day without much wind is recommended. For Winter perhaps October or December is ideal if you have no issue with cold environment.
